When Mitt Romney stated:
“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.
Romney went on: “[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.” (http://m.motherjones.com/politics/2012/09/secret-video-romney-private-fundraiser
I was forced to wonder if he realizes quite a few of those 47% are his supporters. I mean seriously, if every so-called lazy deadbeat voted Democrat how on earth would Republicans have any seats in any electoral body.
All one has to do is look at the reddest states on a map to realize the absurdity of Mitt Romney’s claim. I mean the redder the state the more likely you haven’t taken so-called “personal responsibility” for your life and you ate one of these 47% are part of the population:
“Mitt Romney says citizens who don’t pay income tax will never vote for him. But eight of the top 10 states with the highest number of nonpayers are red states.” (http://m.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/09/where-are-the-47-of-americans-who-pay-no-income-taxes/262499/)
However, we all know how the Romney campaign feels on facts. So there really is no reason to present them with a fact based response. What I am wondering is when someone will ask the Republicans “What Government programs are acceptable and still small Government enough for them?”
Is the GI Bill too much big Government to help our veterans afford college or to start a business. Maybe the Federal Crop Insurance Act which provides relief to farmers hit hard by a bad crop. What about maintaining roads and bridges. One only has to go to http://www.saveourbridges.com to see how much American infrastructure needs taxpayer investment. How many of the 47% of the American people Mitt Romney doesn’t care about would have found a job from the Presidents Americans Job Act rebuilding our infrastructure or from a business that saw better times due to those with more disposable income from one of those jobs.
I mean know Paul Ryan loves to live life on the pages of Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead, but can we really afford to wait for the idolatry of the Market to trickle down some results for the rest of us.
I guess if you can subscribe to the myth that Government has little to no place in your success when social security death benefits helped pay for an out of state school and most of your adult life your paycheck has said Department of Treasury on it, you could believe anything.
I mean, I understand how this myth is important to conservatism today. Yet, I am just asking for a little clarification on which Government programs are Good Efficient Government and which are the evil, evil Big Guvmint. I Guess even if Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan could answer that they’d be forced to change the answer a few times because some member of their astroturfed base would be attack them for being socialists. And with little more then fifty days till November 6th, the Romney campaign only has so much time to change their stories.
